| Adaptive Management: Improving small wetland restorations | 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm | Optivation - Natural Resources Consortium | ||
| The role of monitoring in adaptive management: Improving small wetland restorations Monitoring the outcomes of management decisions is essential if we are to adapt our management practices in the face of rapid ecosystem change. All resource managers with a conservation focus, regardless of whether they are private landowners or work for a resource management agency, have similar needs for efficient monitoring tools. Adaptive management is a process focused on resolving management uncertainty and improving predictions about the outcomes of management decisions. Monitoring is an essential step in the process. The National Wildlife Refuge System’s Private Lands Program is using adaptive management to improve the outcomes of small wetland restorations in Minnesota. We use this example to illustrate how monitoring under an adaptive management framework can be used to reduce uncertainty about the outcomes of management actions. This case study illustrates how the monitoring step of adaptive management can be designed to be relatively simple, efficient, and effective even under significant time and resource constraints.
