Date Name Time
Oct 12, 2010 Glacial Geology of North Central Minnesota 10:00 am - 11:30 am Optivation - Adventures in Lifelong Learning
The regional landscape of North Central Minnesota records multiple glaciations extending back 35,000 years. The region has a unique glacial legacy expressed in some unusual ways. Some of the state’s most important streams, the Clearwater, Red, and Mississippi, flow away from the region but no major streams flow into it. All of Minnesota’s principle eco-regions also come to a common point within the area. This exceptional part of Minnesota has been the site of repeated glaciations by the Lauren tide ice sheet. We will discuss some basic Glacial Geologic principles and apply them to the regional landscape and the sedimentary record of North Central Minnesota.
