“Image Optimization, Why is it Important - What the Heck is That?”
The featured presenter will be Kris Williams, CRI industrial training coordinator. Williams will provide guidelines for proper sizing of images for different outputs, such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, photos for print and for the web. He’ll also compare file sizes from images done properly and those done incorrectly and discuss why using a digital camera to add images to files may not always be the best solution The session format is a half-hour presentation followed by a question and answer period. Attendance is free and open to all who’d like to learn more about the topic.  “Business Ethics for Human Resources Professionals”
Presenting is Rand Park, M.A., J.D.  “Business Ethics is a hot topic for managers and HR professionals, but how would you respond if your CEO asked you to develop an ethics program?” said Park. “This presentation will break down the primary ethical issues faced by companies and organizations, provide guidance to those who draft and manage company policies and guidelines, and share resources for those who are interested in developing a company or organizational code of ethics and ethics training and compliance program.”   Park has taught as an adjunct professor at Hamline University since 1997, teaching courses in legal ethics and business ethics in both the law school and graduate school of management. “Loss Control: Questions in the Field”

Presenting will be Debra Sletten, a Gonvick-based loss control consultant with Minnesota Counties Insurance Trust.  The first part of her presentation is pertaining to OSHA related questions that are commonly addressed during routine safety surveys. The second part, “What’s Wrong With This Picture? Test Your Skills, a Visual Quiz,” consists of a safety slide show highlighting common and more unusual real-world hazards to people and property.
The session is designed to be useful to anyone charged with safety responsibilities including members of the general public. Attendees will receive handouts for both presentations and several fact sheets on topics such as eyewash stations, overhead doors, cranes and hoists, lockout- tag-out procedures and electrical maintenance. Advance registration is required to guarantee lunch and materials. This session will be held at the CRI on Wednesday, January 16 from 11:30a.m. - 1:00 p.m. More information is online. “Timber Appraisal Accuracy – Some Considerations That May Improve Your Timber Cruise”
Presenting will be George Deegan, a forest mensurationist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry, Grand Rapids. Deegan will discuss things to consider when planning a timber appraisal such as sampling considerations, plot sizes, volume determination and statistical measures of precision.  “An accurate estimate of timber volume is a necessary step in determining value,” said Deegan. “With the increase in stumpage over the past decade, accurate volume estimation is more important than ever.  The presentation is primarily targeted to be of interest to foresters who appraise timber. Printed copies of the PowerPoint presentation will be available to attendees. Deegan possesses 27 years of experience working as a forester with the MNDNR Division of Forestry and received his education at the University of Minnesota, College of Forestry. Project Management Program Offered Online
Learning how to manage projects will provide you with a set of tools that, if used correctly, will allow you to identify the tasks, assign the resources, and minimize the risk when tackling a new project.  The online course in “Fundamentals of Project Management” provides a foundation to the Project Management processes and the management tools necessary to ensure success. Topics include project selection, life cycle, scope planning, estimating costs, identifying specific project tasks (so you don’t forget any!), execution and control, and risk management. If you are embarking on a “project”, at work, your business, non-profit, or at home, this class will give you the tools necessary to ensure success. At the end result of the class each student will have a completed project management plan that can be implemented.  This class will be delivered online beginning January 28Click here for more information. Dreamweaver Basics Begins in February
This class will provide a valuable introduction to the fundamentals of Adobe Dreamweaver. Whether you like to hand code your websites or you prefer to work in a visual editing environment where you don’t have to write any code, Dreamweaver has is all. Learn how you can use Dreamweaver’s tools to design your webpage and how Dreamweaver can be used to streamline your website by using design templates. This class will run from February 4th - March 14th and will be taught entirely online. You must have access to a computer and Internet to take this class. Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) Begins Spring Series
The ALL will begin a series of 8 weekly presentations on Tuesday, February 26 from 10-11:30am at the Center for Research and Innovation.  The series will feature a variety of presentations including “Opera - For Real!”byDr. Fulton Gallagher, and “Assisting the Assisters after a Disaster” by Dr. Russ Lee.  The full schedule and newsletter will be issued in February.

Annual Fundraising Series Begins in March
This series of workshops is designed to educate you about having an annual fund raising plan, determining which elements are needed within your non-profit and begin working on your own annual fund raising plan.  This is a hands-on course designed to assist you in having something concrete to begin implementing once you have completed all the sessions.  As an added bonus, you will receive a one-hour one on one session with the trainer following the course.  During this session, your annual fund raising plan will be reviewed and suggestions made for its successful implementation.  All sessions, including the one-on-one review of your organization’s fundraising plan, will be conducted by Deb McGregor-Pfleger.  Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on March 5, 12, 19 and 26. Participants must attend all 4 sessions. The registration form is online.

The Center for Research and Innovation will be closed Monday, January 21 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
