Human Resource Management - Performance Appraisals, Coaching, and
Termination offered Online
Tough times call for great
managers, are you prepared to be one? In this course learn about human resource
topics including reward systems, performance management, and retention, from a
strategic perspective. It will teach business managers how to retain good
employees and coach for improved performance through the use of an employee
performance management system. This course will discuss the importance of
improving and correcting employee performance, as well as what to know when
discipline and termination becomes necessary. This course is online beginning

Grant Writing Course offered
Online
Increase your organization's effectiveness and
competitiveness as a skilled grant writer! Learn each step of writing a winning
grant proposal from the letter of intent to letters of support. Learn to write
concise goals and needs statements, describe your organization and project or
program, develop a budget, create an evaluation and project timeline, and
collect supporting documents critical to the grant process. The course will take
you through the Common Grant Application accepted by most foundations and giving
organizations, and will give an overview of Federal grant formats. This course
is offered online beginning Monday, October 5 with instructor

Traditional Skills Workshop - Natural
Dyes
BSU's Office of Sustainability will host its
monthly Traditional Skills workshop
Thursday, October 8 at 6:30 pm in the Lower Hobson Union. The
cost of the class is $7 and it's open all community members. Advance
registration is suggested. Each course includes an explanation of techniques,
hands-on activities, and by the workshop's conclusion all participants should
have something to take home with them. Click

Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) Fall
Session Continues
ALL events at CRI continue in
October with "Fetal Alcohol Exposure: Costs to Our Community," "Recent
Archeological Investigations in the Bemidji Area," and "Coya Knutson: U.S.
Congresswoman 1954 to 1958." These events are free and open to the public. For

CRI Brown Bag Lunch Series - Green Marketing: What Does it
Mean?
Pack a lunch, come on over to CRI, and improve
your marketing savvy! On Wednesday, October 14 from
12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., Dr. David Smith, Assistant Professor
of Marketing at Bemidji State University, will describe what green marketing is,
how it works and some of the potential pitfalls businesses should avoid should
they decide to make green part of their marketing strategy. This event is free and open to the
public.
Commercial Vehicle Inspection
Re-Certification
Attention Vehicle Inspectors: This mandatory
course is designed to provide re-certification for commercial and/or self-truck
inspectors already in Commercial Vehicle Inspection. Individuals whose
certification has expired must complete this re-certification course to renew
within six months of expiration date. Participants are required to bring their
current certification number and business address with them to class. This
course will take place on Friday, October 16 from 9:00
a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Northwest Technical College. More information and a registration

process-creating job appropriate interview questions and strategies to evaluate
applications, and finally, you will learn about recruiting and hiring. This
course is offered online beginning Monday, October 19 with

Northern Minnesota Safety Council Presents Planning for Safety in
Confined Spaces
At this presentation on
Wednesday, October 21, industrial hygienist
and Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry MNSTAR Coordinator Dave Ferkul
will present on workplace safety issues pertaining to confined spaces. Topics
included in this talk and powerpoint presentation will include an overview of
entry requirements, common hazards/cited items, statistics, and case studies
related to confined spaces. Workshop begins at 11:30 a.m. at

Steam Plant
Engineering
Are you a Boiler Operator
or looking to become one? This 36-hour course is designed to prepare boiler
operators or those preparing for employment as boiler operators to take either
the Minnesota Low Pressure (C Level) or Minnesota High Pressure (Levels A &
B) Boiler Exam for the following classes: special engineer, 2nd class engineer,
1st class engineer, or chief engineer. The contents include the following: Low
pressure - valves, steam traps, pumps, flame safeguards, burners, safety valves,
boiler room safety, and hot water boilers. High pressure - condensers, steam
engines, mathematical formulas, boiler room safety, and hot water boilers. This
course will take place at Northwest Technical College and runs from

Natural Resources Consortium Presents New Developments in
Geographic Information Systems
(GIS)
GIS is nestling into every
corner of our workplace, our travel, our homes, and our hobbies. No longer "A
Specialist's Special Tool," Geographic Information Systems have truly engaged
the masses. Come learn from the Minnesota DNR's Shelly Sentyrz how "painting the
landscape" with laserbeams, forest management from a smartphone, and your Google
Earth favorite places are all inextricably connected. This workshop will take place on Monday,
November 16 at 3:00 p.m. at CRI.
Northern Minnesota Safety Council Presents Distracted Driving:
Dangers and Implications
Distracted
driving increases the risk for everyone on the road. On Wednesday,
November 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Minnesota
State Trooper Scott Mattfield will show a DVD and lead a discussion on the risks
and realities of distracted driving. This presentation takes place at CRI, lunch
