Fundraising for Non-Profits

Dr. Charles Alberti is professor emeritus of education at Bemidji State University.

There never seems to be enough money for educational and non-profit institutions. Many administrators and teachers find themselves stretched to the limits or find it difficult to meet unforeseen expenditures. Helpful strategies as well as specific events and other vehicles for fundraising, including grantwriting, will be shared. Specific suggestions based on the type of institution you represent will be shared with you. To do this, Dr. Alberti will ask each participant to give a profile of their institution, e.g., elementary or secondary school, university, medical center, Boys and Girls Club, Special Olympics, visual and performing arts organizations, museums, local community non-profits, etc.

This intensive one-day course is ideal for teachers, development staff, medical center administrators, leaders of community organizations, or anyone looking to become a more effective and profitable fundraiser.

Course date and time: Friday, June 25; 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Dr. Charles Alberti has been involved with fundraising in most of his career positions. He started out as a high school teacher during which time he involved the students in a number of "product" sales. He became a high school administrator and oversaw a number of fundraisers that the school held. Then he moved onto the university structure and although he became chairman of the Education Department at a university in Illinois, he was asked by the President to write a Federal all-school grant which was funded. During that time Dr. Alberti became aware of the grant writing process. He moved on to become Director of Planning and Development of an eight hospital healthcare organization based in Kansas, where his expertise in special events fundraising, and the writing of private, corporate, and federal grants continued to develop.

Dr. Alberti became certified by the National Society of Fundraising Executives (NSFRE) and became president of the Kansas chapter of that organization. During that time he was asked by the NSFRE to serve as one of six "Deans" for their international conference, which was attended by over 1,000 fundraisers from around the world. Dr. Alberti also served on the NSFRE board. He coauthored a book titled "Money Makers: Special Events Fundraising." Then he became Vice President of Development of a regional medical center in the Chicago area where all of his past experiences came into play plus gaining the understanding of strategies for writing fundraising letters. He eventually moved back into academia at Bemidji State University where he served for 18 years. In addition to teaching, he helped to raise funds for programs and scholarships within the department. Dr. Alberti is currently writing a book with the working title of "Fundraising in Hard Times."
